In a recent LinkedIn post from Invysta Technology Group, hard drive manufacturing legend Finis Conner warned that the current hard drive supply chain is fragile and could be pushed to breaking point by the increasing demand for storage from AI and digital ads.
Conner pointed out that AI models are becoming increasingly complex and require massive amounts of data to train.
This data is typically stored on hard drives. He also noted that the digital ad industry is heavily reliant on hard drives to store user data and deliver targeted ads.
In addition to the increasing demand from AI and digital ads, Conner also warned that the hard drive supply chain is vulnerable to other factors such as geopolitical conflict, a lack of raw materials, a shortage of electronic components, and natural disasters.
Conner concluded by saying that the goal of his article is not to say that a hard drive supply chain crisis is imminent, but to sound the alarm on its potential. He argued that the consequences of ill-preparation could be severe.
